Select The Proper Hinge For Your Project

by Jerry Blackburn

Choose The Right Hinge For Your Project

Because the display of hinges in a home improvement and hardware stores can be dizzying to the inexperienced homeowner, many need some help to know which hinge is correct for the woodworking project or home repair. The first essential step would be to narrow the selection based on weight, shape and size, so that the hinge will be appropriate for the materials used in the project. Large heavy hinges are fine for doors, but not appropriate for smaller, delicate wooden boxes and so on.

In addition, some hinges are designed as reversible hinges, so that either end can be mounted to the top. Other hinges are more decorative and must be installed in a certain position. There are also hinges for left-hand and right-hand doors to consider as well. The loose-pin hinge used for hanging doors is made so that the hinge pin is inserted and removed from the top. Right-hand hinges and left-hand hinges can be distinguished by simply standing on the outer side of the door to see if the door opens to the right side or to the left side.

One detail that some do-it-yourself homeowners don’t consider is how much of the hinge will be visible when the project is complete. If the hinge shows, it may be best to choose something more decorative, though some homeowners prefer simple and functional hinges to show as well. This depends on personal taste. Some people prefer the hinge to be hidden, so thought should be given to how the hinge will function in this case.

Shopping for the appropriate hinges can be much easier if the homeowner can ask good questions and understands the printed information about each type. This list may help.

? Back flap hinge ? a version of the butt hinge, commonly used for furniture

? Ball-bearing hinge ? permanently lubricated but slightly more expensive, for heavy-duty doors

? Butt hinge ? normally range in size from 13 mm to 150 mm. Varieties include rigid pin and loose pin. Often used for mounting home doors and cabinet doors

? Butterfly hinge ? for lightweight doors, in a variety of shapes and patterns

? Double-acting hinge ? opens in either direction, usually on folding doors

? Flush hinge ? less strength than butt hinge, often used for cabinets, concealed except for hinge barrel

? Knuckle hinges ? loose joint hinge, decorative, shows only the knuckle

? Offset blind hinge ? full opening and swing away, screen/storm doors

? Parliament hinges ? when hinge pin must extend past door face

? Pivot hinge ? versatile, recessed doors, overlay doors, flush doors

? Spring-loaded hinge ? automatically closes door, adjustable tension available

? Table top hinges ? leaf section tables

? Concealed hinges ? 25 mm to 36 mm in size, adjustable after fitting, chipboard and MDF

In addition to these hinges, there are a number of specialty hinges, including the strap hinge, T-hinge and continuous hinges. Some are designed for heavy-duty use while the continuous hinge is perfect for chest lids, cabinets and so on. A piano hinge is a continuous hinge.

5 Types of People Who Should Have Their Own Website

by Darrel Hawes

It is becoming simpler all the time to launch a new website. Should you do it?

If by chance you are a:

Business owner,

Prospective business owner (starting a new business),

Work for someone else,

Have a hobby,

or an Opinionated social commentator

If any of these describe you, a website would benefit you.

Owners of an existing business: every day, more people are online than the day before. If you do not have something to offer them, your business will suffer.

New or prospective business owners: you should start off right and include a website in your marketing plan from the beginning.

You work for someone else. As an employee, you should be aware of the two different kinds of websites that might be helpful to you.

First, begin a personal website dedicated to whatever field you are working in. Do it today. Do not consider any type of site other than a blog.

Secondly, if you work for a firm of any size, you can begin a website that covers something about that company. It might be the history of the company, or how to repair the item sold by the company. It should without saying that this is a personal project, and you work on it in your spare time. However, you will eventually let your supervisor or manager know about the site. This will set you apart from almost everyone else in your level of the company.

Hobbyists: if you are passionate about your hobby, start a site to tell the world about it. Thousands, probably millions, have done the same; why shouldn’t you?

Social commentator: if you feel strongly for or against some topic, a website can help spread the word far and wide.

Increase Mileage Tips - Spark Plugs

by Bryan Alan

Oil prices continue to soar to record levels. In return, gas prices, coupled with the major housing slowdown, is turning the economy on its head. With national averages now above four dollars per gallon, many motorists are looking for practical ways to increase mileage. To increase mileage, there indeed are several practical and inexpensive tips you can take - as well as some more drastic ones if you dare!

Understanding how your engine operates is the first key to increase mileage. The basic explanation is that very small amounts of gasoline and air are introduced through the intake valve into the piston chamber. Here, the piston moves up and down to compress this mixture into a more powerful, condensed state. Then, your spark plug kicks in with a spark of electricity that ignites that mixture of gasoline and air.

The resulting combustion produces an expanded source of energy that is used to power the vehicle into motion. The process of doing this is repeated thousands of times each minute your engine is operating (this is also known as Revolutions Per Minute - or RPMs). Depending on your engine type, your vehicle either has 4, 5, 6 or 8 of these chambers (think V-6, V-8, 4-cylinder etc).

Making this process of energy transfer work better is a key to increase mileage. Lets discuss the role your spark plug plays specifically. The amount of spark the plug is able to send into the chamber is directly related to the quality of the plug itself. The more air tight the seals on the plug, and the higher the platinum level in the plug, the more efficient the charge sent will be. A more efficient charge means less additional charge is needed to get the same output level. Thus, less RPM’s and less fuel is used.

Your vehicle will operate more efficiently with new performance level spark plugs. Most plugs will get you an additional two to four percent increase in fuel mileage. Fortunately, a great performing plug is also inexpensive - usually around $4 each. This makes your return on investment very attractive.

Womens Car Insurance: Women As Better Drivers!

by David Hill

Women drivers have a reputation on the road, although it really depends who you are talking to as to what that reputation is. Other drivers, male drivers, on the road are constantly bemoaning the bad women drivers out there that do not drive off at an acceptable speed (within the limit). However, car insurance providers love them because they do tend to have several advantages over their male counterparts. This is one reason as to why womens car insurance is generally cheaper than the same level of insurance for male drivers. There are several reasons why this is so in the eyes of insurers.

However, it is necessary to look into the financial and practical reasons as to why car insurance quotes are cheaper for women than men. The former can best be explained by the case of Mr and Mrs Bickley from a small village in the West Midlands. Their brand new Ford Focus needed insuring and so they both set about getting quotes.

They are both aged 29, with Mrs Bickley being older by three months. They live in a rural, low crime area and have a secure garage attached to their home. The only difference, apart from gender, is the fact that Mr Bickley had 4 years no claims bonus instead of the 3 that Mrs Bickley had.

As an experiment, they both went to E-Sure and CIS for car insurance quotes to see how much it would cost them to insure the car individually. Despite the extra year no claims for Mr Bickley, Mrs Bickley would have obtained the insurance for 107 cheaper.

Women receive lower car insurance quotes than men because they tend to have fewer serious accidents than men. In fact, they statistically have fewer accidents in general, and fewer claims as a result. Fewer claims ultimately mean that the individual insurer is far less likely to have to pay out high amounts and thus have a greater profit. This profit is passed on to the woman in the form of a discount!

Taking this into account and the coupling it with speed will also make a difference. Men have a need for speed that women do not seem to have. They tend to have more convictions for speeding than women because they drive faster and fail to concentrate as much!

The choice of car is also a big part of why male car insurance premiums are higher. Men have a habit of buying faster and more powerful vehicles because women think practically rather than living out their fantasies. If anything happens to the powerful cars, whether stolen or in an accident, it costs more to fix or replace them, which contributes to the premiums as well.

Womens car insurance also comes from specialists. Every woman can choose from specialist or general insurance but men do not have the luxury. As such, men should expect to pay more now and into the future!

How To Create Lifetime Customers

by Theo McLanahan

As a business owner, you know how important your customers are. Without them, you wouldn’t have an income. Once someone becomes your customer, they are more likely to purchase from you again in the future.

It is a smart business move to take the time to build long lasting relationships between yourself and your customer. Creating lifetime customers will net you more profit, than constantly seeking out new one-time customers.

Creating quality products is definitely the first step in developing your customer relationship. If your products are anything less than great, your customers will not see a reason to order from you again. However, if you give them something beyond their expectations, they will want to try out more of what you offer.

The next step in relationship building is providing good customer service. When a customer contacts you, especially if it is with a problem, it is important to respond back in a timely manner. If your customer contacts you, they are not thinking about all the other people who are requesting your attention. They are only thinking about the reason that they contacted you, and they want you to give them your full attention.

In an effort to keep loyal customers aware of your products and services, maintain contact with them on a regular basis. Distributing a monthly newsletter is one way to inform clients of special limited time offers and new items you may be offering. In this way customers that have forgotten to purchase more things from your business because of their own busy schedules will also be reminded to do so.

A great way to motivate repeat purchases from old customers is holding “customer only” sales. Taking their previous purchases into consideration, you may be able to offer some kind of gift or special deal that coincides with their specific needs.

Consider one example. Suppose your company sells day planners and you will soon be releasing a new time management audio. Make a list of which customers have previously bought planners and provide them with a brief report regarding how important time management is that also mentions your new audio. You could boost sales by offering these previous customers a special “pre-launch” price.

Establishing long term customers is by no means a short or simple process. It can be done, however, by showing them deep respect and sincere appreciation. Investing time in doing so will eventually help you make strong relationships with lifetime customers.

Debt Elimination Advice

by Ray Lam

Serious financial problems can make your life miserable and you may feel as if there is no way out from under your debts. However, there is relief in sight. There are a number of debt elimination programs that can help you rid yourself of enormous debts and give you the freedom you desire.

The priorities of debt elimination should begin with those credit situations that are a higher rate than others. For example, if an individual has two credit cards and one has a substantially higher interest rate than the other, the one that is the highest should be paid down first. This will help the overall payment amount to be much less in the long run.

Debt elimination is a process and not a program as programs come and go. A debt elimination system or process is designed to completely eliminate your debt producing a debt free lifestyle for you to enjoy. You deserve to be debt free and not have that burden weighing you down. A good debt elimination system can do this for you.

You could possibly eliminate your debts in just a few years, rather than decades. Debt elimination is not a loan. It is a way to pay less interest, lower monthly amounts, and still become debt free in less time than you imagined.

It’s a great policy to save and then spend. If it makes you a miser, so be it, at least you won’t go bankrupt paying your debts. This is also one of the ways of debt elimination. By not having debt in the first place, you are doing yourself a favor. Therefore make it a point to do debt elimination whether you are home or office, only in this way can you rid yourself of debt. “Only when I have cash will I spend” should be your motto for all the transactions in your personal as well as professional life to the maximum extent possible.

The Basics of Model Railroad Buildings

by Bill Murphy

Even if you aren’t an architect you can enjoy making model railroad buildings. Sometimes it’s just too hard to find that perfect building or bridge or train station that we can picture so we may just have to build it on our own.

So is it complicated? Do you have to be educated or handy with tools or can you just use what you find around the house?

You may need to do some miter cuts or need to know some advanced woodworking and use some tools if you’re trying to get that perfect copy of something you’ve seen. Or you can take existing models and pilfer parts to start your buildings and make other modifications as you go.

In many cases doing this will allow an enthusiast to utilize simple tools such as X-acto knives and scissors along with a little imagination to achieve spectacular results.

Some materials that are useful for creating your own building include balsa wood, foam, wood glue, mat board and cardboard and even lightweight plastics.

Plaster and corkboard along with foils and spray glues can come in handy. Glitter and beads may add that little extra as well. Hobby stores should carry anything that you are looking for.

Where To Find More Ideas

Tips and articles on working with these materials have been printed in many magazines that you may want to see if you can find either in a 2nd hand bookstore or by demand at your local library.
